Find out more about our Dementia Live® training program during Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month this June.

June brings a second set of recognitions that are always in our thoughts as home care providers: Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month and the Longest Day fundraising event for the fight against Alzheimer's.

At Overture Home Care, we will be holding our annual "Alzheimer’s Succs" succulent planting fundraiser on the Longest Day (June 21st). Please join us for more details and pictures later in the month.

We are proud to host such events to raise funds for the science that will someday put Alzheimer's behind us for good — but our most important contribution to the people currently suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's is our commitment to compassionate care, and to the hands-on training in understanding and empathy that we provide our caregivers, the families of our clients and the entire local community.

It is frightening to find yourself in a world you no longer understand, and also frightening to care for someone whose world you no longer share. At Overture Home Care, we want to help bridge those terrible gaps caused by Alzheimer’s and dementia — and we could not be prouder of our ongoing status as Authorized Providers of the Dementia Live® training program created by the AGEucate® Training Institute.

Dementia Live is a high impact, dementia simulation experience that immerses participants into life with a neurodegenerative disease. Utilizing specialized gear that simulates dementia-specific changes, such as altered eyesight, hearing and tactile sensation, this safe and powerful experience is an effective tool to strengthen understanding of and empathy for those suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia.

Overture Home Care currently has five Dementia Live certified coaches: Denise Helms, Jamie Carter, Tiasha Kindle, Stephany Olvera and Paige Wolk. During on-onboarding, these dedicated coaches provide Dementia Live training to all our prospective Overture Home Care employees and caregivers. Two of our coaches — our CEO Denise Helms and our Senior Vice President Paige Wolk — are also certified through AGEucate in Compassionate Touch®, an approach to care that combines skilled touch and specialized communication to prevent stress reactions for people living with dementia.

These five coaches have provided Dementia Live and Compassionate Touch training to over 1,200 attendees at local training sessions, for neighborhood groups and institutions like UNTHSC (the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth), the UNTHSC Center for Older Adults, the UNTHSC School of Public Health, the Department of Internal Medicine & Geriatrics, the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Dementia C.A.R.E.S. Support Group, as well as numerous senior living communities, first responder organizations, Alzheimer’s support groups, and the family members and friends of our clients, both in person and virtually.

The feedback we have received from our caregivers and the other attendees at our Dementia Live workshops has been overwhelming and reinforces our commitment to provide this essential training:

"Wonderful experience – grateful for the experience – stunned with how little I knew about dementia in the beginning and how much better you’ve made me."

"I worked in an Alzheimer’s unit for four years and I never knew the aspects of the patients’ condition and why they were behaving like that."

"[T]his totally changes my perspective on how a dementia resident/client would see things in their world."

During this Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, please join us in thanking the coaches at AGEucate for developing these wonderful programs, and our own Denise, Jamie, Tasha, Stephany and Paige for leading us all to a better understanding of the challenges faced by those most in need of our care.
