Spotlight on Home Safety Awareness for Older Adults

March 10–16 is Patient Safety Awareness Week. At Overture Home Care, we’re taking advantage of this week to shine a spotlight on safety awareness for independent older adults and the home care caregivers who help them maintain that independence, keeping them from becoming patients anytime soon.

As our population gets older, more older adults choose to live independently at home. As those numbers increase, the need for home safety awareness also increases. This month, we’d like to direct your attention to the folks at the Health in Aging Foundation, an organization committed to helping older adults and their caregivers maintain health, independence, and quality of life — and to the essential Home Safety Tip Sheet they’ve made available for free download in both English and Spanish.

We encourage you to download this document and review it carefully with your older loved ones. You might already be aware of fall prevention adaptations in the bathroom, but have you considered that many older folks trip and fall while rushing to answer a ringing telephone? Did you know that along with medication management to prevent accidental overdoses and interactions, you should also check the utility cabinet as mixing various cleaning fluids can create poisonous gases? And though burglar alarms and doorbell cameras can help prevent in-person crimes, have you discussed email and telephone-based scams and frauds with your older loved ones?

If you’re an older adult living on your own, or care for an older person living alone, please download the tip sheet to find out about these and other safety issues today!

Would you like personal help spotting potential safety issues? Overture Home Care can provide you with a safety assessment in the privacy of your own home, or the home of your older loved ones. Give us a call 24/7 at (817) 887-9401 or (214) 887-9401 and we’ll get you started.
