Join us in recognizing Men’s Health Week, and the many male caregivers among us!
In 1994, Congress determined that the week leading up to Father’s Day would be honored annually as Men’s Health Week — a time to recognize and address the specific health issues faced by men and boys. While Father’s Day was yesterday, it’s important to take a moment to pause and recognize last week’s designation. During the current public health crisis, we’d like to extend that recognition to the many male caregivers among us, and to the specific physical and mental health issues that they face.
According to a National Alliance for Caregiving / AARP study, though women remain the primary caregivers for elderly relatives, men have taken on a significant percentage of such caring duties — and those men are more likely to find themselves juggling care with full-time jobs. To make things worse, as the stresses of balancing hours of work and hours of care build up, many male caregivers are less likely to seek medical or emotional help for themselves — diets deteriorate, exercise is neglected, and mental health issues and depression can go unnoticed and untreated.
If you or a family member or friend fits this description, we encourage you to seek help. Take advantage of the anonymity of the internet by joining an online support group — and if your health is at risk, please also take advantage of expanded telehealth coverage during the current public health emergency to seek advice from a doctor or mental health professional.
And of course, take advantage of us. With the compassionate caregivers at Overture just a phone call away, you will never have to face caregiving burdens alone. Please contact us 24/7 for a free home care consultation: (817) 887-9401.
