September 11 is National Grandparents Day

We can’t think of a better time to celebrate National Grandparents Day than Healthy Aging Month, because family engagement — and connection to young people in particular — is one of the best tools we have to keep our older loved ones mentally, emotionally and physically sharp.

Study after study has shown what we all know instinctively to be true: social isolation is an associated risk factor for early mortality. But savvy senior caregivers know that there’s nothing quite like interacting with children to bring joy to our older loved one’s lives — and we also know that many childhood games make wonderful, safe and low-impact shared activities. Doodling, drawing in coloring books, completing jigsaw puzzles, reading out loud and exploring make-believe situations with “dress-ups” from grandma or grandpa’s closet are all wonderful opportunities for intergenerational family bonding.

Did you know that children who grow up with a connection to their grandparents also have healthier emotional lives as adults? According to a long-term survey study from Boston University, the incidence of depression is reduced for both young adults and seniors when the bonds between them remain strong.
