Navigating Dementia: How Overture Home Care Supports Families and Their Loved Ones
Dementia is a challenging and often overwhelming condition that affects millions of older adults worldwide. As World Alzheimer's Day approaches on September 21st, it's essential to shine a light on the impact of dementia not only on those diagnosed but also on their families and caregivers. At Overture Home Care, we understand the complexities of dementia care and are committed to providing the highest level of support to families facing this journey.
Out and about with Overture Home Care!
The Overture Home Care team was out and about all month in August, bringing insights and information to an important senior care podcast, supplying vital training to a senior community in Dallas, and debuting as a featured small business in the new Southlake & Grapevine Scout Guide.
Dementia Live® empathy and understanding from Overture Home Care featured on the AGE-u-cate™ blog
We are honored to announce that our friends at AGE-u-cate chose to feature Overture Home Care and the work of our dedicated Dementia Live trainers and caregivers in their August 3, 2023 blog post, Unlocking Empathy and Understanding: Empowering Caregivers to Make a Profound Impact by Cris Castellano:
This Parkinson’s Awareness Month we’re strengthening our commitment to Parkinson’s dementia patients and their families through Dementia Live® training.
The theme for this year’s Parkinson’s Awareness Month is #Take6forPD. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease every six minutes. To fight back against that grim statistic, the foundation has created checklists of six-minute actions that anyone can take to help advance research, improve access to care, or empower and educate in the fight against the disease.
A Blue Zone Message of Holiday Hope from our CEO, Denise Helms, RN, BSN
Blue Zones are a handful of areas around the world where people enjoy quantifiably longer and more independent lives. In some of those areas — such as the Greek island of Ikaria — those long-lived folks also show near-zero rates for conditions like Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
Join Overture and Dementia CARES for Caregiver Education and Support
As we recognize National Family Caregivers Month this November, we must also recognize National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month — and the connection between the two through the family members devastated by the demands of caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Checking In and Looking Out
Consider the holiday visit a good time to have a look around for warning signs that you might have missed, and to sit down for a heart-to-heart talk about health concerns and care needs that your loved ones might not have wanted to burden you with.
November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
At Overture Home Care, we participate in Alzheimer’s awareness and fundraising events not just in November, but throughout the year. This year we supported Longest Day events in June, and many of our team members took part in the Fort Worth Walk to End Alzheimer’s on October 30. Our commitment extends into our daily work as well. Since 2018, we have been a Dementia Live® authorized organization and we are dedicated to providing empathic and enriching care for our clients with cognitive impairments, including those with Alzheimer’s disease. Although the root cause of this terrible disease has not been fully determined and there is no current cure, there are supportive therapies, interventions and directed activities that can make life with Alzheimer's easier for patients and more bearable for their families.
Do you struggle starting activities with your loved one with Alzheimer’s?
Recreational activities, familiar hobbies, work-related pursuits, involvement in daily tasks and social interaction can help people living with Alzheimer's remain engaged and content, reducing agitation and potentially dangerous wandering behavior.
Sharpening Seniors’ Minds While Staying Safe at Home
One downside to our senior friends and loved ones spending so much time alone this year is that quality of life can really take a turn. Here’s a helpful list of strategies to maintaining healthy memories and active minds. And, the best part, all of these activities can be done safely at home.
Signs to Watch for This Holiday Season - Virtually or In-Person
Whether you’re able to see your aging loved ones in person or on video call, please review these warning signs to keep a lookout for. While we’ve kept our senior friends safe from COVID-19 through social distancing, the isolation is really taking its toll. This checklist will help you easily determine if your loved one could use some help – and companionship. If you’re visiting by video, see if your loved one can safely show you around their home to check for some of these signs.
